FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing a mother’s placenta after the birth of her baby by gently steaming, dehydrating, powdering and placing it into capsules for the mother to ingest. The purpose of ingestion of the placenta is to reintroduce beneficial hormones, proteins, and other nutrients to her body following labour and birth to help restore balance and provide an overall feeling of wellness to aid in the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period.
WHY IS IT BENEFICIAL TO CONSUME MY PLACENTA?
Placenta consumption’s main and most common benefits are improved mood, energy, and breastfeeding. Being that the placenta is incredibly high in vitamins, minerals, & hormones, it has also helped mothers with reduction of postpartum hemorrhage, replenishment of iron levels, emotional support/balancing while decreasing postpartum depression, assisting with pain relief & recovery, increased release of the hormone Oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with Baby, and provides an increase in CRH, a stress reducing hormone, etc etc! Such a magical organ!
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF ENCAPSULATION?
The process, in short, looks like this: I pick up your placenta shortly after birth (whether home birth, hospital birth, etc.), I prep and sanitize my work space, examine and rinse your placenta, then gently steam over filtered water, with organic ginger, lemon and jalapeño. I then slice and put it in the dehydrator at 116° for 8 to 12 hours. When dry, I grind the strips and encapsulate the powder. This is a two day process, after which I return the capsules to you.
CAN I STILL ENCAPSULATE IF I AM GBS+?
Yes. Group B Strep is not considered a contraindication. In most cases, if no fever or infection is present at birth, encapsulation would be acceptable, however only in the traditional method, where the placenta would be steamed prior to dehydrating.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET MY PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION SERVICE?
When you have decided that placenta encapsulation is right for you, please send me an email me at hello@novarising.org to get set up. I will need to know your full name, estimated guess date, phone number, and planned place of birth. I will then send you my Placenta Encapsulation Information Packet and I will be in contact via text as well. I can answer any remaining questions you may have, go over all the information you will need to know in order for your placenta service to go smoothly, talk about what you'd like for your placenta service and what screenings I need to see from you etc. I will need a signed waiver, included in the Placenta Encapsulation Information Packet. Payment must be received in full ($350 via Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or cash) to officially reserve your spot and guarantee your encapsulation service. Payment is non-refundable. Once payment is received, it’s official!
IS THERE A PRICE DIFFERENCE FOR ENCAPSULATING TWINS OR TRIPLETS ETC.?
For every extra baby, add $50.00 to your total cost.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM GETTING MY OWN PLACENTA?
I work with one placenta at a time, start to finish; each placenta usually comes in a container & that container is always checked for identification, if no identification is on the container then it will be written on with the correct info. before it is properly stored. If there are multiple placentas while one placenta is being prepared the others will wait in a special mini fridge dedicated to placentas only.
HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY PLACENTA AFTER DELIVERY?
When you birth your placenta, it has about 4 hours outside your womb before it begins to spoil. It is imperative that you place your placenta immediately in a plastic bag (1 gallon Ziploc or hospital biohazard bag) or plastic container (hospital should provide either or); then place your bagged/contained placenta in an ice cooler and sandwiched between ice. (Hospital will provide ice ie. ice machines). Or if birthing at home, you may immediately place your placenta in a bag/container and then put it in a fridge or freezer until I come to retrieve your placenta. The sooner you get your placenta properly contained and into my hands the better!
WHAT SANITARY PRACTICES ARE USED IN PREPARING MY PLACENTA?
First, I will ONLY work with ONE placenta at a time, from start to finish; every placenta I work with is confirmed STD negative and free of infection. Constant hand washing, hand sanitizing and new gloves are used multiple times during the entire process. Prior to working on your placenta I sanitize my entire workspace with a hospital grade solution called Cavicide, this solution is generously sprayed and then allowed to sanitize for 5+ minutes before it is wiped clean. All my tools/trays/supplies are cleaned with soap and hot water, using a new sponge every time to avoid cross contamination; all tools/trays/supplies are then placed in a strong bleach solution bath for sanitizing purposes up to 1-8 hours and vigorously rinsed once sanitized.
IF YOU ARE PICKING UP MY PLACENTA, WHEN DO YOU ARRIVE?
Once you have birthed your placenta, properly (see above) contained your placenta, and your placenta is available for pick up; please send me a text. My pickup window is 8am-8pm, 7 days a week. I will text you an ETA and then contact you when I arrive. If birthing in a hospital, due to ongoing Covid regulations, I will meet your birthing partner, doula, or nurse at the entrance of the hospital to collect your placenta. Please mind, that some hospitals place a "hold" on your placenta for either 24 hours or until the time you are released from the hospital. If that is the case then we can figure out the best day, time and location for pick up (usually your home).
WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY PLACENTA CAPSULES?
From the moment your placenta is received in my hands to the time your placenta capsules are given into your hands it's about 24 hours (average). Though in some circumstances you can receive your placenta as quickly as 16 hours all the way up to (not exceeding) 72 hours depending upon arrangement, thaw time, multiple placentas, holidays etc.
WHAT IS YOUR SERVICE AREA?
I service all areas within 10 miles of 90260 (Lawndale, California). This includes pick up of placenta and drop off of your capsules. Areas beyond this require a travel fee. Alternatively, this fee could be waived if the placenta is brought to me. I am always willing to work with clients.
